The Ministry of the Environment and of Energy Security (MASE) recognizes the central role of territories in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and thus support Regional and local governments in the definition and implementation of territorial sustainable development strategies, as foreseen by law. Moreover, it continuously seeks for regional and local governments participation and contribution in NSDS implementation, monitoring and review processes, in a circular way.
At international level, the topic of SDGs localization encounters increasing attention, as a transformative lever and enabling condition to progress towards the achievement of the national strategies identified by each Member State and of the 2030 Agenda SDGs’. Italy, widely recognized as a best practice on multilevel governance and territorial engagement (see report “Multilevel Governance for SDGs localization” by UN-Habitat), contributes to the process.
The Italian approach to localization, based on the integration between the national and local levels, mirrors into the Voluntary National Review (VNR) presented by Italy at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2022. It integrates 12 Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs), as the result of the participation and collaboration between 18 administrations (10 Regions and 8 Metropolitan Cities), setting the scene for spreading the approach centered on integrated review exercise.
