In July 2024, during the visit of the Italian Prime Minister to China, a new memorandum for collaboration on environmental protection and climate change mitigation was signed between Italy and China.
This new agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation, which began in 2000, on new and equitable foundations in the areas of climate change, biodiversity conservation, pollution, and training. The agreement seeks to increase opportunities for dialogue, training, and joint activities.
Environmental cooperation between Italy and China began in 2000 with the launch of the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection, aimed at promoting projects for environmental protection and sustainable development in China.
In 2014, the visit of Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti to China marked a pivotal moment for revitalizing the partnership, culminating in the signing of a Joint Declaration that strengthened cooperation on new foundations, with contributions from private investments and increased involvement of enterprises.
