On September 24, 2018, the Italian Minister for Environment Sergio Costa and the Minister for Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, have undersigned, in New York, a Memorandum of Understanding for the cooperation to sustainable development.
Looking at the objectives that the international community has assumed with the signature of the Paris Agreement, Italy and Arab Emirates have agreed on cooperating for the reduction of greenhouse gases and adaptation to climate change through projects, exchange of technical assistance, technology transfer, and by promoting public-private partnerships.
Among the areas of common interest outlined in the Memorandum, there are:
- Support to the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions of the United Arab Emirates;
- Stimulation and development of policies to encourage economic diversification and technology transformation towards a sustainable economy;
- Identification and implementation of measures in the field of urban planning and land development, buildings and construction, transport, renewable energy, energy efficiency and resource efficiency and cleaner production;
- Policies and technical solutions for sustainable farming, fisheries, food processing, landscaping, biodiversity conservation and tourism in hyper-arid environment.
