Peru

The Peruvian territory shows a great variety of landscapes: from the plain along the Pacific coast to the Andes cordillera, to the Amazon rainforest to the east which, by extension, is the third in the world, (after Brazil and Congo). At environmental level, it has to face various problems such as deforestation, (1% per year), desertification, soil erosion, air pollution in urban centers, pollution of rivers and coastal waters.

The collaboration between MASE and Peru began in 2016 due to the Memorandum of Understanding which establishes cooperation in the field of climate change vulnerability, risk assessment, adaptation and mitigation. In 2018, the Supporting NDC’ s implementing in Peru project was approved, which aims to achieve the mitigation and adaptation objectives adopted in the context of the Paris Agreement, (NDC – Nationally Determined Contributions).

Today we are working on the signing of the new Memorandum of Understanding to continue the started collaboration.

DUBAI, December 11, 2023 –The Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and his Peruvian counterpart, Albina Ruiz Ríos have signed, on the sidelines of the COP28 in Dubai, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which extends the environmental cooperation between the two countries for a further 5 years.

The Agreement expands the areas of cooperation, including the Rio Conventions relating to the fight against Climate Change (UNFCCC), the protection of Biodiversity (CBD), the fight against Desertification (UNCCD) and the sustainable development goals set out in the 2030 Agenda

From June 29 to July 3, 2023, MASE carried out a first technical visit to Peru to monitor the activities of the Supporting NCD's Implementing Project in Peru, and to verify the results, in view of the conclusion of the activities at the end of July.

The project, co-financed by MASE with a contribution of € 2 MLN, aims to support the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment, (MINAM), for adaptation and mitigation actions’ implementation within its Nationally Determined Contributions, (NDCs), to achieve sustainable development to climate change.
