UN Water Conference - Side Event Italy/UNESCO - 22 March 2023
From 22 to 24 March, the international community and all stakeholders gathered at UN Headquarters in New York for the Second World Water Conference - the UN 2023 Water Conference - held 45 years after the first conference, which took place in 1977 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Organised by the two co-host countries - the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands - with the support of UN-Water and the UNDESA secretariat, the Conference represented a turning point for increasing political and social attention to water-related issues: from the recognition of water as a universal human right, to its management and conservation, through the priorities in the different uses, the impacts on human health, on different ecosystems and on urban and rural economies.
One of the main outcomes of the conference, was the adoption by the international community and all stakeholders of Voluntary Commitments collected in the | Sustainable Development (un.org) web platform, created in order to show the global community the nature of the commitments made and give it the opportunity to monitor progress and impacts over time.
The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Mr. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, led the delegation that represented our country at the Conference. The delegation, coordinated by our Ministry, was integrated by the technical representatives of the relevant Ministries (Health, MAECI, MASAF) and of the main Agencies and Scientific Institutions dealing with water according to their mandate (ISPRA, ISTAT, ISS, AICS).

SIDE EVENT
As part of the conference, on 22 March, a Side Event was held, organised by the USSRI Directorate of this Ministry, in collaboration with UNESCO's World Water Assessment Programme, entitled: "Partnerships and Cooperation for Water: The main findings of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2023 and experiences from the countries".
The Side Event, which was also attended by our Minister, started with the presentation of the Report and then highlighted the importance of Partnerships and Cooperation in water-related issues, also through the sharing of good practices and innovative solutions.
In addition to the already mentioned WWAP-UNESCO and MASE, the Side Event was also participated by representatives of UN-Water (FAO, UNDP, UNIDO, UNEP), OECD, IHP, FAO-Mountain Partnership, the Republic of Tunisia, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat - AKAH and the World Youth Parliament for Water.

UN Water Conference - Side Event Italy/UNESCO - 22 March 2023
Dal 22 al 24 marzo, la comunità internazionale e tutti gli stakeholders si sono riuniti a New York, nel Quartier Generale delle Nazioni Unite, per la Seconda Conferenza Mondiale sull’Acqua - la UN 2023 water Conference - che si è tenuta a 45 anni di distanza dalla prima conferenza, che ebbe luogo nel 1977 a Mar del Plata, in Argentina.
Organizzata dai due paesi co-hosts – Repubblica del Tajikistan ed il Regno dei Paesi Bassi – con il supporto di UN-Water ed il segretariato di UNDESA, la Conferenza ha rappresentato un momento di svolta per l’incremento dell’attenzione politica e sociale verso le problematiche legate alle risorse idriche: dal riconoscimento dell’acqua come diritto umano universale, alla sua gestione e conservazione, passando per le priorità nei differenti usi, gli impatti sulla salute umana, sui diversi ecosistemi e sull’economia urbana e rurale.
Uno dei principali esiti della conferenza, è stata l’adozione da parte della comunità internazionale e di tutti gli stakeholders di Impegni Volontari – Voluntary Commitment – che sono stati raccolti nella piattaforma web della Water Action Agenda | Sustainable Development (un.org), creata allo scopo di mostrare alla comunità globale la natura degli impegni assunti e dare ad essa la possibilità di monitorare nel tempo i progressi effettuati e gli impatti esercitati.
Il Ministro dell’Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica, On. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, ha guidato la delegazione che ha rappresentato il nostro Paese alla Conferenza. La delegazione, coordinata dal nostro Ministero, è stata integrata dai rappresentati tecnici dei Ministeri competenti in materia (Salute, MAECI, MASAF) e delle principali Agenzie e Istituzioni scientifiche che si occupano di acqua in funzione del loro mandato (ISPRA, ISTAT, ISS, AICS).

SIDE EVENT
Nell’ambito della conferenza, nel giorno 22 marzo, si è svolto un Side Event organizzato dalla Direzione USSRI di questo Ministero, in collaborazione con il World Water Assessment Programme dell’UNESCO dal titolo: “Partnerships and Cooperation for Water: The main findings of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2023 and experiences from the countries”.
Il Side Event, che ha visto la partecipazione del nostro Ministro, ha preso avvio dalla presentazione del Report per poi mettere in evidenza l’importanza dei Partenariati e della Cooperazione nelle tematiche legate all’acqua, anche attraverso la condivisione di buone pratiche e soluzioni innovative.
Al Side Event hanno preso parte, oltre ai già citati WWAP-UNESCO e MASE, anche rappresentanti di UN-Water (FAO, UNDP, UNIDO, UNEP), OECD, IHP, FAO-Mountain Partnership, della Repubblica della Tunisia, della Repubblica del Kirghizistan, dell’Aga Khan Agency for Habitat – AKAH e dal World Youth Parliament for Water.
