Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition - Youth4Climate Manifesto released

The Manifesto presents the proposals emerged in Milan and discussed in subsequent meetings. It will be sent to the governments that will participate in Cop26

Here is the first "Youth4Climate Manifesto" which includes the ideas and proposals that emerged in Milan, at the end of September, during the "Youth4Climate Driving Ambition" and then discussed  through subsequent consultation meetings, the last of which was held today in virtual format. "Youth4Climate Manifesto" will be sent to all governments that will meet in the decisive Cop26 of the UN Climate Convention at the beginning of November, in Glasgow.

In Milan, the four hundred young participants had already met the representatives of around 40 countries and had a discussion with the Italian government, the British government (which chairs Cop26) and the UNFCCC.

Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition - Meetings with governments

On September 30, at the end of Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition, the participants presented, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, their proposals to the Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Minister Stefano Cingolani, the President of Cop26 Alok Sharma and the Ministers of the Environment of more than 40 countries, gathered in Milan for the last PreCop before Cop26 in Glasgow. The presentation was handled by the four co-chairs: Nisreen Elsaim (Sudan), Ernest Gibson (Fiji), Nathan Metenier (France) and Sophia Kianni (USA).

"Your generation," Draghi said, addressing the young people, "is the most threatened by climate change. You are right to ask for empowerment, to ask for a change. The ecological transition is not a choice, it is a necessity. We have only two options. Either we face the costs of this transition now, or we act later - which would mean paying the much higher price of a climate disaster." "We are aware - underlined the Italian Prime Minister - that we must do more, much more. This will be the goal of the G20 Rome to be held at the end of October. At the G20 we want to make a commitment regarding the goal of containing global warming below 1.5 degrees. And we want to develop long-term strategies that are consistent with that goal."

The meeting was followed by a press conference attended, together with Minister Cingolani, by Jayathma Wickramanayake, UN Youth Envoy, two delegates Vladislav Kaim, from Moldova, and Reem Al Saffar, from Iraq, and Alok Sharma, President of Cop26.
