Third meeting of the joint committee, energy requalification and weather alert projects approved

Bonn, May 9, 2018 – On the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, the third meeting of the Italy-Swaziland Joint Committee was held. Director General Francesco La Camera led the Italian delegation, while the Swazi head of the delegation was Emmanuel Dlamini, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

During the meeting, the following two project proposals were approved. They were developed following the technical missions in Swaziland in October 2017 and April 2018:

  • The "Fossil fuel free and green building of the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital" project involves the energy requalification of the Manzini hospital. The interventions will ensure the hospital energy self-sufficiency, equipping it with a photovoltaic system of over 1 MW, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the improvement of some essential services such as, for example, water heating, room cooling, instruments’ sterilization.
  • The "Strengthen Swaziland early warning system and climate services" project provides for the strengthening of the national weather forecast and warning system. The main areas of intervention are: the extension of the observation network with the installation of meteorological and hydrometric stations, the provision and use of models for short, medium and long-term forecasts and the creation of an alert protocol.
