Fourth Joint Committee Meeting: New project to support the Maldives Meteorological Institute
Bangkok, September 6, 2018 - The fourth meeting of the management committee of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of the Environment and the Republic of Maldives was held, on the occasion of the SBSTA 48-2, SBI 48-2 and APA 1-6 sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Among the decisions of the management committee, the approval of the project "Implementation of an Integrated Meteorological and Climate Information and Decision Support System at the Maldives Meteorological Service, (MMS)" stands out. This, aims to strengthen the ability to collect, analyze and manage data of the Maldivian Meteorological Service; and, in particular, the following capabilities will be strengthened:
- The capability to predict, in advance, crucial weather events for the area such as El Niño, the Indian Ocean dipole, the cyclones.
- The capability to prevent, mitigate and manage disaster risks deriving from extreme events.
- The capability to predict sea level rise.
